I've been seeing Dr. Vo every 6 months for about 8 years and I just saw him again last week. I have to admit that I was hesitant to go to the dentist during this strange COVID time that we live in, but I didn't want to break my streak considering that I used to be absolutely terrified of the dentist before Dr. Vo.
About a week before my appointment, Dr. Vo's office called and asked me to get a COVID test before coming in, or I could take a rapid test at his office for $25. I checked the City of San Francisco's COVID test site and was able to get a same day (actually same hour) appointment, so I immediately hopped in my car and drove off to Pier 30 for my test. The testing site was a drive through - I just rolled down the window and a guy in a hazmat suit stuck a swab deep up both my nostrils and twirled it around until I almost sneezed. About 3 days later, I got my results (negative - phew!) and showed the results when I checked in at Dr. Vo's office. They also checked my temperature when I checked in. There were no other patients in the office while I was there.
The dental cleaning and checkup were pretty much the same as always. Dr. Vo performs the cleanings himself and he's pretty gentle and quick. the only difference is that now he and his assistant are wearing face shields and N95 masks. Everything was already sanitized between patients so that hasn't really changed either.
Although I wasn't sure if I wanted to go to the dentist during COVID, I'm glad that I went. -
We had a very pleasant dinner at the Vault Garden last Friday night. It's a little weird saying this, but it felt like the first "normal" dining experience that we've had during the covid era. The Vault Garden is located in the giant outdoor plaza of the building formerly known as The Bank of America Building - adjacent to the famous "Banker's Heart" sculpture. All tables are outdoors, with very generous spacing between tables - there were at least 12 feet between us and the neighboring tables.
Obviously, outdoor dining can be challenging in SF - but the Vault Garden got it right. The plaza is elevated above the street with security discreetly posted at the perimeter. There were dozens of flaming propane heaters keeping the area warm and comfortable. Our table was flanked by 2 flaming heaters on either side, so we felt warm and toasty without having to wear our jackets. We were also lucky enough to have almost no wind during dinner.
The service was very attentive and professional - and the food was what you'd expect at a nice California restaurant. I had the Caesar Salad, which was garlicky and cheesy, but a little on the salty side, and the seared salmon - the salmon was cooked perfectly and had a nice bronzed-colored crisp skin. For dessert, we shared a slice of chocolate cake which was rich and chocolatey.
We had a very enjoyable meal, and we'll definitely be back. -
The Bay Area has really good food, but we're really lacking in BBQ. I still fondly remember Flint's in Oakland and International Smoke is pretty good, but Saison Smokehouse is amazing!
Saison Smokehouse took over Angler due to Covid19 and I have to admit that I was very skeptical about going to a 3 Michelin star restaurant for BBQ but I have to say that they nailed it. I think it's absolutely bizarre that you have to go to a 3 Michelin star restaurant to get good BBQ in SF, but it is what it is.
I've had the half-rack twice and both times were perfect. The meat was falling off the bone tender, yet still moist and fatty. The hot red sauce complimented the ribs perfectly and their super flakey biscuits were out of this world.
Their BBQ chicken is also very good - the meat is nice and firm. I don't know where they source their chickens, but it tastes like a pastured heirloom chicken.
Their collard greens with ham hocks were also amazing - they had a delicious smoky porky flavor.
Highly recommended - BBQ is very comforting during these times and Saison Smokehouse does it right! -
Baonecci is one of our favorite restaurants in North Beach, and they've recently re-opened with al fresco table service on the sidewalk and on the parking spaces in front of their restaurant. As always, their food is fantastic (they make the best thin crust pizzas anywhere) and their service is warm and friendly.
On my most recent visit, I had the porchetta and mushroom pizza, a glass of rose, and a cannoli for dessert. As always - the pizza's crust was thin and crisp and was absolutely delicious. It was also pretty fun to sit outside and enjoy one of our favorite pizzas and one of our favorite restaurants.
We live in the neighborhood and Baonecci is one of our regular spots. We're so happy to see them re-open! -
Portofino is a great addition to the neighborhood and is probably my favorite "new" restaurant that I discovered while Sheltering in Place. I've ordered take out three times and have enjoyed every meal. Their oyster po-boy is excellent and filled with very fat and meaty perfectly fried oysters, possibly even better than the po-boys I've had in New Orleans. The white and red clam chowders are also very good and their fish and chips (made with Canadian cod) is very tasty.
The service and food are both excellent - I hope to actually try dining in one of these days. -
I like Shake Shack a lot - I've had excellent Shake Shack burgers in NYC, LA, and more recently in Larkspur. I was really happy to hear that a new Shake Shack was opening up within walking distance of me, however, this new one is rather disappointing.
Perhaps sucky chain burgers is just a San Francisco thing? I love love love In N Out, yet the SF In N Out is far and away their worst location.
I knew something was a bit off when I saw dozens of orders of fries stacked behind the counter. All of them were already in their little paper trays and were just piled on top of each other getting cold. While I'm a fan of Shake Shack's burgers, I am not a fan of their fries - they're just frozen crinkle fries - served in school cafeterias everywhere. Cold fries just are never good.
At around 2pm, I had to wait about 10 minutes to order -- half of the self-service kiosks were broken so it took a while and another 10 minutes for my order to be ready. I don't mind waiting a while for my burger if it's served hot off the grill and the fries straight out of the fryer - however, my burger and fries were just warm. I was already prepared for my fries to be warm/cold since I saw that they were already pre-made before I ordered them, but my burger wasn't hot either. Both the burger and fries tasted like they had been sitting out for 20 minutes. Disappointing. I think that it would have been a 4 or 5 star burger if it was served hot.
On the bright side, the chocolate frozen custard was pretty good.3/5/2024 -
We had a really nice dinner at Ms Chi Cafe - the food and the service were both excellent.
We were fans of Chef Shirley on Top Chef and made a special trip to Culver City to check out her restaurant when we're in LA over the weekend. I'm usually not a fan of fusion food, but everything we had at Ms Chi was delicious. It happened to be Dine LA restaurant week so we opted for the special Dine LA special menu. Unfortunately Chef Shirley's cheeseburger dumplings were not included on the Dine LA menu, so we added them as an a la carte item.
I love cheeseburgers and I love dumplings - and the cheeseburger dumplings were amazing - combining the best parts of cheeseburger and dumpling. The best part was that the dumplings were bursting with cheeseburger juice. Amazing!
The other items included Chilean seabass cooked chasiu style and a crispy Hainan chicken rice. Both were fantastic.
The service was super friendly and hospitable - our waiter explained all the items on the menu and Chef Shirley's husband was running the front. -
Oh man, I just love fried chicken, and a new fried chicken place opened up just down the street from me! Maybe it's time for me to buy some pants with elastic waistbands?
I stopped by today for lunch and they were still obviously trying to figure things out. There were only a couple of people in front of me, but it took forever for the lone cashier to take the orders.
When it was finally my turn to order, I got a 3 piece dark combo, which consisted of 2 thighs and 1 drum, and a biscuit. ("Combo" just means that it comes with a biscuit - it does not include a side or a drink). I know I'm a weirdo, but I usually like to get some veggies with my lunch, but the closest I could get was a side of beans and rice.
As an aside - I really do appreciate being able to get all dark meat. I hate chicken breast.
There's no seating - this a to-go only place. No biggie for me, since I live just a couple minutes away.
So I took the chicken home, and it was OK. It wasn't particularly Krispy or Krunchy or even tasty for that matter - in fact, the drumstick was a little on the soggy side, but it was OK. Not bad - much better than the Safeway deli fried chicken, but definitely not great. It was mostly lacking in flavor and spicy heat - it didn't taste all that cajun to me. Since I was at home, I took out my bottle of Tabasco and poured it liberally all over the chicken, and that helped quite a bit. If the chicken actually came with a small bottle of Tabasco or Crystal, then maybe it might be a 4 star chicken.
The biscuit was also OK - it was strangely sweet, and the beans and rice were also OK. -
Popeyes is the best "chain" fried chicken - in general, I'm a big fan of their spicy fried chicken, and I really wanted to try their new super-hyped chicken sandwich.
I haven't been to this Popeye's location before, but I was hit with the stench of BO as soon as I walked through the door. The place smelled like a gross sweaty men's locker room.
Despite all the news reports of Popeye's chicken sandwich shortages, I was able to step up to the counter and order a spicy chicken sandwich pretty quickly. I should have noticed that while the line at the counter was short (just a couple guys), there were more than a dozen dudes standing around waiting for their order. I had to wait about 15 minutes for my order - which gave me plenty of time to notice that nearly all the customers were dudes, surrounding a single somewhat uncomfortable looking woman. Nearly everyone waiting had ordered the chicken sandwich.
So I finally got my sandwich and it was fine. The chicken patty was meaty and crunchy, and the pickle slices were surprisingly thick, giving the sandwich a nice fried chicken batter and pickle crunch. However, the flavor was just OK and could hardly be considered spicy. I know that I'm going against popular opinion, but Chick-fil-a is quite a bit tastier (politics aside). I think The Bird in SF SOMA is better than both.
I made my order a combo - meaning that it came with a soda and a side. For my side, I ordered the green beans - because who doesn't order veggies at a fast food place, right? Anyway - the green beans looked absolutely disgusting - They were more yellow/orange/brown than green, and were swimming in a really gross looking slime.
Surprisingly, the green beans were absolutely delicious! I loved those green beans - the gross slime was very porky, and there were little bits of pink-colored meat (ham?) mixed in with the beans. These green beans were the best fast-food veggies I've ever had!
So in summary:
Spicy Chicken Sandwich: 3.5 stars
Green Beans: 4 stars
Ambiance: 1 star -
This was actually my favorite meal on the Big Island, which is kind of funny since I had just eaten at Merriman's the night before and it cost 10X as much (but was also really good).
I was in the mood for a BBQ plate lunch and got what I wanted at Kona Korean BBQ. I ordered the kalbi which was cooked perfectly - sweet with a little bit of char and some nice gristle on the bone, accompanied by the customary two scoops of rice and a scoop of mac salad.
The service was quick and friendly, and we ate our meal outside on picnic tables in the shade. Delicious!
